The Chabad congregation whose bid
for a new synagogue building was blocked first by the Municipal Council of the
Sydney suburb of Waverly and on appeal by the congregation, by the Zoning Court
which affirmed the decision of the Municipal Counsel, will re-submit plans to the
municipality. (N.B. In the first item on this subject, I erroneously referred
to the Municipal Council of the Town of Bondi.)
Judging from what has transpired
since the decision of the Zoning Court hit the international headlines, it
looks like the municipal council chastened by the negative comments about its
original decision, has thought it wise to re-inject itself with reason and common sense; adopt an
independent process for the evaluation
of the plans, and work in co-operation
with the leaders of the congregation in order to insure that at the end of the
review of the re-submitted plans, the
permit to build the synagogue will be issued.
The new development application
may be in place by December of this year.
I reckon that is just what
Crocodile Dundee would have done, right from the outset!
