The town of Bondi is situated in the suburban
area of Sydney, New South Wales. It is a multicultural town, with a population
of about 9700,15% of which is of Jewish faith mostly Jews of European origin
who fled from the countries under German occupation or survived the
Holocaust and settled in Australia after the World War II.
When the Jewish community decided to build a new
synagogue, the town council conducted a risk assessment and concluded that the
new house of worship would be a tempting target to the Islamic State.
The council also decided that that any efforts to
modify the proposed design of the synagogue
to make it more secure and mollify concerns would also be unacceptable
because “physical measured proposed to
deal with the identified threats will have an
unacceptable impact on the streetscape and adjoining properties.”
The matter eventually ended up in Court.
The Court upheld the town council’s ban on the
grounds that it posed an unacceptable security risk.
Obviously, neither the members of the town
council, nor those who sided with them or the Court, know the true meaning of the phrase
“living in society” and the civic and moral obligations of members of society.
At this point, it is unclear whether the
community will appeal against the decision.
As, Andrew Bolt, Australian popular columnist and
political commentator put it: “What a shameful day for this country.” Indeed.
