First Prime Minister Investigated for Breach of Official Languages Act

Thursday, 9  March 2017
Another 1st for our Justin Jr.: It’s 2017!
The Prime Minister both loves to be the first to do or say this and that and likes to collect 1sts along the way. And, it so happens that he seems to have no trouble doing just that.
Now guess what? He is the first, one and only Prime Minister about whom not  just one but nine complaints have been filed with the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages and the .The Office must have thought this is serious enough a breach of the Official Languages Act that, it  launched an investigation into these complaints.
Why? Instead of attending the annual Davos economic summit, the PM decided that it would be better if he stayed home and go on a tour to meet with and consult the electorate on various issues.
But he decided to do his consulting in a rather peculiar way: In Sherbrooke, Que. he insisted in answering in French questions put to him in English, because he was in Quebec; and when at first, he tried to defend his decision to insist in proceeding that way by pointing out that recently in a similar type meeting in Peterborough, he had answered in English questions put to him in French.
When further queried about his approach, he conceded that maybe he should have answered these questions partly in French, partly in English but lest he put his feet in his mouth again, he did not say why could not answer have answered the questions in the language in which they were put to him, if nothing else as a matter of plain, simple old fashion courtesy and respect; and even out of respect for his late father.
Trudeau Sr. may he rest in peace, must have turned in his grave at least twice.
